Presented here is a receipt signed by Oliver Ellsworth, an important figure in the Revolutionary War period of American history. A staunch opponent of British rule, Ellsworth was a member of the Connecticut delegation to the Continental Congress in 1787. Ellsworth helped draft the United States Constitution, and later served as the third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
This receipt is written on an 8 x 4 inch piece of paper in black fountain pen. Ellsworth is one of numerous signatures on this slip of paper, writing his name in black fountain pen. This receipt is dated January 16th, 1776, mere months before the Declaration of Independence was signed. This item comes with a LOA from University Archives.
