In 1789, Alexander Hamilton was named the Secretary of the Treasury under the presidency of the great George Washington. The astute banker served as Secretary of the Treasury through January of 1795. As the first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton is nearly solely responsible for crafting the entire American economy and monetary system. In this letter, written in on April 14th, 1791, Hamilton is making one of his Officers of the Customs aware of a possible rise in his salary after a ruling by the United States House of Representatives. Hamilton seems pleased to boost the salaries of his agents in the beginning years of the new republic, ending his letter with the thoughtful sign-off "I am, Sir, Your Obed. Servant" above his crisp, black ink signature. This historic letter is an incredible piece of American history. Considering the age and nature of the item, it is in wonderful condition.
