2020 Late December Auction Closing January 3
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 1/3/2021
Offered in this lot is a letter signed by John Adams sent to J.P. De Wint, the husband of John and Abigail Adams’ granddaughter. The letter congratulates De Wint on the birth of his daughter. The letter was written on November 30th, 1819, when Adams was 84. The former President exhibits a touching familiarity with De Wint, with Adams writing “I am my dear Jim your affectionate friend and father” at the end of his letter to De Wint. Adams also adds, “My love to Caroline and kind regards to your mother” near the end of the letter. On the header of this letter, Adams refers to his estate as “Montezillo” in a tongue-in-cheek jab at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello.
The letter has been written in black pen, with Adams using a similar implement to sign his name. Please note that the letter comes in two pieces. It is generally in good condition otherwise, with only minor wear due to aging present. This historic letter is a fascinating look at the personal life of America’s second President. The letter comes with a LOA from Beckett Authentication Services for Adams’ historic signature.
