Future president Abraham Lincoln signed this check, made out to “Johnson & Bradford” on February 16th, 1859. A year before his election to the presidency, Lincoln was just beginning his campaign for the Republican nomination. His campaign crystallized in March of 1859 with a powerful speech in Chicago, and from that point on his campaign for president was an unstoppable force, even with his scant public speeches.
This check is for the value of $72.10, or roughly $2,000 in present day currency. Lincoln signed the bottom right corner of the check as “A. Lincoln”. His signature, rendered in black pen, is exceptionally strong, and has been graded a MINT 9 by PSA/DNA. This check is in excellent condition, and has been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA (83390334).
