Presented here is a letter handwritten and signed by William Tecumseh Sherman, a general in the Union army during the Civil War. Sherman was an astute soldier, and a crucial part in the campaign to liberate Vicksburg, Mississippi, and the Chattanooga Campaign, which eliminated the Confederacy presence in Tennessee. Sherman’s most famous moments came in the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman’s March to the Sea, which decimated Georgia and the Confederacy war efforts.
This letter was written on December 20th, 1862, just over a week before Sherman led the Union’s opening assault of the Vicksburg Campaign. This letter was sent from Memphis, Tennessee, and is addressed to the Secretary of War, who at the time was Edwin Stanton. This letter was written in black steel-tip fountain pen. Sherman has signed this letter as “W.T. Sherman”. This letter is in good condition and is a tremendous artifact from one of America’s greatest military leaders. This letter is accompanied by a LOA from JSA (Z83366).
