Offered is an 1865 President Andrew Johnson signed document. Johnson was the 17th president of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869, assuming the presidency, as he was vice president at the time of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He signed this document in black fountain pen in the lower right center, which serves as the appointment of "Stephen Brooks" to the Customs House of Middletown, Connecticut. The document is dated July 13, 1865, and also bears the signature of Johnson's Secretary of the Treasury, Hugh McCullough, also in black fountain pen. The document is printed in black type on white paper, and is brown with age but intact. The document is completed in black fountain pen with inscriptions along with pre-printed text. Johnson returned to Tennessee after his presidency and gained some vindication when he was elected to the Senate in 1875, making him the only former president to serve in the Senate. He died five months into his term. This item comes with a LOA from Beckett Authentication (AA13846).
