In the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, President Andrew Johnson issued a Proclamation of Amnesty, allowing members of the Confederate States of America to pledge loyalty to the reaffirmed United States. This “Amnesty Oath” was signed by Thomas Harris, of Augusta County, Virginia. Harris never learned to read or write, so his signature is rendered in the form of an “X”. The administrator of the oath filled in the remainder of the document. J.C. Wheat, a notary public, countersigned this oath twice. The oath is in remarkably good condition, with creases from folding its only detraction. The oath was printed on an 8 x 7 inch piece of paper and comes with a LOA from University Archives.
