     This engraving is titled “The First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation Before the Cabinet”. Engraved by Alexander Hay Ritchie in 1866, it is based off of an 1864 painting by F.B. Carpenter. This engraving shows President Lincoln, along with members of his cabinet, sitting in a grand drawing room, the magnitude of their task clearly weighing on them. The subjects shown include President Lincoln, Edwin Stanton, Samuel Chase, Gideon Welles, Caleb Smith, Montgomery Blair, Edward Bates, and William Seward. This engraving is presented in a 40x30 inch frame. This item comes with a LOA from the University Archives.
