Winter Auction 2017 Ending January 29
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 1/29/2017
Offered here is a photograph of Ulysses S. Grant and his family visiting the Karnak Temple complex in Thebes, Egypt. This 9.5 x 11.5 inch photograph was taken in late January, 1878, and features President Grant, his wife Julia, and sons Frederick and Jesse. The Grant family is surrounded by a team of porters and attendants. John Russell Young, a correspondent from the New York Herald, took this photograph while accompanying the president on this trip.
Grant, rakishly perched in the front row of the photograph, is clad in a pith helmet and silk suit. A year into his post presidential life, Grant was in the middle of a nearly three-year long world tour when he stopped in Karnak. This photograph exhibits very slight wear and tear consistent with a 130 year old photograph, but is otherwise in near perfect condition. This item comes with a University Archives LOA.
