Graded 40 VG 3 by SGC. Hall of Famer. One of ten baseball subjects among several sports' "World's Champions" included in Allen & Ginter's N28 insert series, this collectible of John M. Ward is particularly coveted among 19th Century enthusiasts. "Monte" Ward left his mark on the game of baseball in several significant ways. He was an outstanding pitcher as well as an everyday player, amassing 2,151 hits and 163 wins (including 46 in 1879) during his illustrious career. Later, he applied his talents in team management and, as an attorney, also helped to refine important aspects of the game's labor relations policies. This relic from Ward's playing days carries a fabulous representation of the period's unmistakably vibrant lithographic artistry. Boasting solid display quality in both front and back aspects, the piece has been penalized in grading terms for inoffensive edge chipping, most noticably at the right side.
