The only U.S. President to serve two non-consecutive terms, (1885–1889 and 1893–1897) Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States and was one of only two Democrats elected to the presidency from 1861-1933. The leader of the pro-business Bourbon Democrats (a term used to describe a conservative or classical member of the Democratic Party) Cleveland supported business interests and the goals of the banking and railroad industries but was opposed to subsidizing them and encouraged competition. Cleveland fought against political corruption and cronyism and was considered to be a man of honest integrity whose interest in political reform and fiscal conservatism was appealing to both Democrats and Republicans of the time.
