This group of historical police artifacts is of the utmost rarity consisting of an original police baton held in place by a belt frog attached to a police officers' belt that includes a brass finished metal buckle with the word "POLICE." In the cabinet photograph depicted in listing, a New York City police officer in full uniform displays these same artifacts. The New York City Police Department formed in 1898 when the many separate police departments of the former functioning Metropolitan police force were consolidated. This important time in NYPD history reflects the reform efforts of then Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt (1895-97) before he moved on in his life of continued public service, included becoming President. This fact just adds to the significance of these rare artifacts from this period. The beautiful rosewood baton (nightstick, billie club) measures 23 inches and includes the original braided lanyard. Also included in this lot are two photographs of the police officer shown in this listing, one which measures 4 x 6 inches and a second that measures 8.5 x 11 inches.
