The resolute faces of five, clean-cut athletes gaze outward from history through the windows of these elegantly designed cabinet photo cards. The high-quality likenesses, produced by McGillivray of Ithaca, New York, circa 1896, feature individual Ivy League gridiron stars from the prestigious Cornell University. The cabinets' thick-cardboard mounts (which have absorbed more than a century's-worth of handling with little apparent effect) measure a bit larger than 5" x 7", and the photo depictions are presented on center ovals spanning about 5" in length. An exceptional quintet of rare paper heirlooms, these artifacts present a glimpse of football personnel from the sport's earliest days, and are simply compelling to view.
