Peter Jackson was one of the greatest boxers of the 19th century, although he was never able to fight for a title due to his race. A black native of the US Virgin Islands, Jackson accumulated a boxing record of 51 wins and five losses. Jackson fought many of the great fighters of his time, including “Gentleman Jim” Corbett, who he fought to a 61 round no-contest. He also fought James L. Jeffries, a champion heavyweight who would later lose a thrilling bout to Jack Johnson.
This pin measures 1 ¼ inch in diameter, and features a photograph of Peter Jackson standing shirtless with his arms crossed. “Don’t Bother Me” and “High Admiral Cigarettes” appear above the picture of Jackson. The back features text that reads “The Whitehead Hoag Co.” and various dates relating to the production of this button, which was manufactured in 1896.
