Very rare original photograph of the USS Maine baseball team done in 1898. It is a little faded but across the top it reads "Maine Baseball Team" along with "All Blown up at Havana Feb 15th 1898 Except No.1" . At the bottom all players are identified and in the center it reads "Copyright 1898 Geo. C. Mages Chicago". Shortly before this photo was taken the team from the USS Maine won the Navy baseball championship led by the star player who was a black pitcher named William Lambert. On February 15, 1898 the USS Maine exploded in Havana harbor killing 260 including everyone in the photo with the exception of JH Bloomer who is No.1 in the photo and has "(the only saved)" written after his name. This is a very rare original photo. The photo measures 9 1/4 x 7 3/8" and has was laid down long ago on old card stock. It has been framed under glass with the frame measuring 15 3/4 x 14 7/8". This photo was created May 2, 1898, less than 3 months after the terrible tragedy. A RPPC of this image sold for $2530 at in 2004.
