Offered in this lot is an incredibly rare Uruguayan soccer medal from December of 1901. This stunning medal originates from the Deutscher Fussball Klub, one of the original four teams of the Uruguayan Football Association founded in 1900. Deutscher Fussball Klub were founded by German immigrants to Montevideo in 1896 and took part in Uruguay’s first domestic soccer season in 1900, although they would dissolve after the 1909 campaign. The club played at Parque Central, one of Uruguay’s oldest existing soccer stadiums and the current home of Club Nacional.
This ancient medal is circular, with “Deutscher Fussball Klub Montevideo” etched in high relief around the border. “ROSSI” and a statuesque woman are also etched on the front of the medal. Etched on the back is “Parque Central / 15 Diciembre 1901” and “E. Poncell”. The medal is attached to a blue and white circular ribbon. This historic medal comes from the earliest days of the Uruguayan Primera Division.
