Encapsulated and assessed "Authentic" by SGC. Issued by the baseball publication as a component of the extensive W600 series, this highly displayable, approximately 5-1/4" x 7-1/2" relic features a portrait likeness of the New York (N.L.) squad's first baseman, D.L. McGann. Embossed upon its greenish-beige-hued border is the legend, "Sporting Life - Philadelphia - 'The Paper That Made Base Ball Popular.'" The magnificent portraits populating this issue were all taken by Carl Horner, the most acclaimed baseball photographer of his time. Initially awarded to collectors in return for coupons that were found in the newspaper, plus return postage, the cards were later sold outright for ten cents apiece. This aesthetically dramatic relic presents favorably, with minor corner wear and a spot of superficial soiling at the top-left aspect.
