This card has been graded VG-EX 4 by PSA but that doesn’t begin to tell the story. Presented is an impressive high-grade example of one of card collecting’s classics of all time. Joe Jackson’s rookie card is the extremely rare and desirable E90-1 American Card. Rarely is this card seen in this grade and this particular example is outstanding for its grade. To say that we are comfortable describing this card as a nice example, even when compared to examples a full grade higher, would be an understatement. Very few cards were made for Joe Jackson during his years as a player and this is his earliest and therefore his rookie card. Not only is this Jackson’s rookie card, it is also one of the key rarities in the E90-1 set and the most sought after card from that set. Joe Jackson’s inclusion in any, much less one of the most important “E” card issues, is nothing short of a miracle for collectors due to the fact that for most of his tenure with the Athletics he stayed close to home in the minor leagues and only played 10 games for Connie Mack’s team. That this card is one of the most elusive cards is no great mystery, it exists on the want lists of many collectors whether focus is on sets or key cards. This particular example of this exceedingly rare and important card is very high end for its grade. The unusually vivid image of Joe Jackson is framed to virtually perfect proportions by clean, white borders. As is always the case, Jackson’s lips are somewhat off their intended mark. The back of this card is as white as one could hope for and seems to have escaped staining which is often associated with caramel cards. A few very light surface ripples (factory?) are barely visible, when lighting conditions are perfect, and possibly represent the only reason this card didn’t receive a grade of EX 5 by PSA. Precious few E90-1 Joe Jackson rookie cards exist in high grade and this one should be considered one of the elite.
