Charles Comiskey will always be remembered as the owner who allegedly inspired the White Sox to throw the 1919 World Series. Whether this is true or not is a matter of opinion, but Comiskey’s impact on the team from Chicago is without question. As owner of the Chicago White Sox for 30 years, Comiskey saw five American League Pennants, two World Series titles, and built the stadium that would bear his name. He also oversaw some of the day to day operations of the club.

Offered here is a typed letter on “Chicago White Sox American League Base Ball Club 35th St. and SHIELDS AVE. PHONE YARDS 125 CHARLES A. COMISKEY , PRESIDENT CHARLES A. FREDERICKS, SECRETARY” letterhead dated “Aug. 21, 1911”. The letter appears to be written to a scout and it reads “Mr. Geo. E. Mills, 57 Burnham St., Portland Maine. Friend Mills: I am herewith enclosing you my check for $150.00 in pay-ment in full for services up to date. Have noted with great interest the men that ou have written about, and in the event they are not purchased, I will make an endeavor to draft them.  The additional amount sent you is for services rendered and in appreciation of you efforts on behalf of the White Sox Club and myself. With kindest personal regards, trusting that you will write me occasionally throughout the year, and hoping to be able to use your services that coming season, I am, Very sincerely yours,” and signed by Comiskey in black fountain tip pen.

The letter measures 7 ½ x 9 ½ inches and displays toning due to age and minimal edge wear. There are several crease folds consistent with placing in an envelope and the typed print is still very clear, along with Comiskey’s signature. A wonderful opportunity to own an early 20th century signed letter from one of baseball’s most famous owners. This item comes with a LOA from JSA (BB21250) for Comiskey’s signature.
