Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of these United States, signed and typed this letter from 1911. Wilson, who was elected to the office of the President in 1912, was at the end of his tenure as Governor of New Jersey when he typed this letter on September 1, 1911. A member of the Democratic Party, Wilson was the first Southerner elected president since Zachary Taylor in the middle of the 19th century. One of Wilson’s chief achievements was helping to promulgate the League of Nations, the precursor for the United Nations. The offered letter was typed on Official State of New Jersey Executive Department letterhead, was sent to a Mr. Davis of Mesquite, Texas, and was in response to a letter Mr. Davis sent to the governor offering his support. Wilson goes on to thank Mr. Davis for his support and expresses his pleasure with the words of encouragement and hopes to meet Mr. Davis when he travels to Dallas that autumn. Wilson goes into detail and states “…we are plunging into our annual struggle here for a legislature that will really represent us, and I am keeping in training” and closes the letter with “Cordially and sincerely yours” and signed the letter in black ink. An additional inscription is located at the bottom and reads “I think I must have met Woodrow Wilson, who write this letter to my father. No, I recall it was Abe Lincoln I met” in blue ink at the bottom of the letter, presumably from the son of Mr. Davis. The letter contains toning, crease folds vertically and horizontally across the letter, and early elements of edging. The personal typed letter signed by Woodrow Wilson comes with an LOA from Beckett Authentication for the signature.
