In the decade after its 1912 publication, Christy Mathewson’s “Pitching in a Pinch” could be found on virtually every American boy’s bookshelf and public library. The book is not only a “how to” guide to pitching in the big leagues, but also a lesson in the good sportsmanship and clean living exemplified by its author. The book was written by the Giants ace with the help of ghostwriter John Wheeler and inspired a whole generation of young ball players. But, in addition to the kernels of wisdom revealed within its 300 pages, this volume of “Pitching in a Pinch” has been signed and inscribed “Very Sincerely Christy Mathewson” on the inside cover in bold black fountain pen which has aged to a rich brown.
A separate inscription is found on the upper portion of the inside cover reading “Don Taggau 1516 Glenwood” in black fountain pen. As is often found with this wildly popular volume, the book shows good use. The front cover has separated from the binding but the does not affect Mathewson’s signature at all. The inside cover remains bright with just a few areas of toning from age. The pages show light edge wear and toning from age along with some bent corners as expected from a well-read book. The outside covers show good wear with edge scuffing and wear and corner wear. Please refer to Goldinauctions.com for detailed photographs. A signed copy of one of the most influential books in early baseball history and it comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA (B05598) for the signature.
