In 1916, Ty Cobb was undeniably the greatest player in the game. He had just won his ninth consecutive batting title and had set the single-season stolen base mark that would not be surpassed until 1962. To mark his territory before he went off to fight in WWI, Cobb became the only player in history to record two 35-game hitting streaks. Cobb returned from the war and continued his batting prowess, successfully transitioning from the Deadball into the Home Run Era.
This Ty Cobb pro stock bat has been dated between the years 1916 through 1922, during which time Cobb hit a combined .379, including .401 in 1922, and won three consecutive batting titles. This Hillerich & Bradsby bat shows outstanding use with a handle crack. Many ball marks are seen on its barrel and abrasions are found on the back barrel. The handle has been taped to about 12 inches in a tight spiral pattern and the knob has a carving that resembles a box with a plus sign. PSA/DNA has determined that the tape on the handle was applied to secure the handle and not related to Cobb’s use. Measuring 33 ¾” and 37.7 ounces, this well-used bat is a quiet testament to the lumber of the Ty Cobb era. The bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B15743).
