Uncle Sam is one of the most enduring icons of the American military that has existed, in some form, since the War of 1812. This poster is from just over a century later, and was used to recruit willing American men to fight in World War I. This drawing of Uncle Sam is based on the British “Lord Kitchener”, a similar figure who extorted patriotism from the hearts of young soldiers. The image of Sam himself was based largely on the appearance of its artist, James Montgomery Flagg. This poster features a drawing, in full color, of Uncle Sam aggressively pointing his index finger at the viewer. Text below the drawing reads “I Want You For U.S. Army” and “Nearest Recruiting Station”. This poster comes in a 33 x 43 inch frame.
