Led by legendary head coach Knute Rockne, the University of Notre Dame's 1923 squad featured the fabled Four Horsemen backfield of Harry Stuhldreher, Don Miller, Jim Crowley and Elmer Layden, who led their team to a 9-1 season. Representing that significant Fighting Irish season is this rare original team photograph.
In 1924 Notre Dame captured the National Championship with a 10-0 record and were led by the now mythical backfield quartet of Elmer Layden, Harry Stuhldreher, Don Miller, and Jim Crowley...dubbed the "Four Horsemen" by famed sportswriter Grantland Rice. The cabinet predates the magical season by one year, being issued in 1923; but all four of the horsemen are present on the cabinet along with legendary coach Knute Rockne. Rockne stands at the far left of the third row, Crowley is seated in front of Rockne in the second row, Layden stands in the back row second from the right, and Miller and Stuhldreher are seated in the first row (Miller left, Stuhldreher next to him in the middle). The cabinet photo measures approximately 9 1/2" x 13". An incredible piece for the Notre Dame or vintage football collector!
Image measures at 9.5x13", and it is mounted to its original cardboard backing. Photograph exhibits light wear throughout with extensive wear exhibited on the cardboard backing, but its eye appeal remains extremely solid. An extremely important piece of gridiron nostalgia from the historic South Bend organization.
This formal team photo features the Notre Dame squad in their best uniforms. Knute Rockne is dressed in his Sunday best at the far left of the middle row. This photo exhibits a few scratches and abrasions, none affecting the crispness of the professionally done image, and is affixed to a sturdy cardboard backing, which could be modified to fit any frame or display requirement. Apparently, these imperial team photos mounted on cardboard may have been given to team members only based on the provenance of other similar known photos. A tremendous team photo of one of Rockne's great teams, that is fast approaching its 100th anniversary and a huge spike in value.
