The Hall of Fame ace Walter Johnson earned his first World Series title with the Washington Senators in 1924, defeating the New York Giants in a classic seven-game World Series. The final game was held at Washington’s Griffith Stadium in front of over 30,000 fans. Washington player-manager Bucky Harris started the righty Curly Ogden but pulled him after two batters to insert the lefty George Mogridge into the game and disrupt New York’s game plan. The Giants held a 3-1 lead until the eighth inning, when Harris’ sharp grounder to third took a bad hop around the glove of the Giants 19-year old third baseman Freddie Lindstrom to plate Nemo Leibold and Muddy Ruel and knot the score at three-all. Johnson came in to pitch the ninth inning, keeping the score locked until the Senators capitalized on a second miscue by the future Hall of Famer Lindstrom in the 12th inning. Earl McNeely’s grounder evaded Lindstrom’s glove, allowing Ruel to score from second and walk off the World Series. This was Washington’s final World Series title, with the next championship in franchise history won by the Minnesota Twins in 1987.
