Other than Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and John McGraw were the titans of New York baseball in the 1920s and 1930s. Gehrig, a two-time American League MVP, was the polar opposite of his boisterous teammate Babe Ruth in every way except skill at the plate. With a .340 career batting average and 493 home runs, Gehrig was every inch the slugger Ruth was. Although his tragic death cast a dark shadow over his playing career, there is no doubt that Lou Gehrig is one of the greatest baseball players to ever live.
John McGraw was the mercurial manager of the New York Giants, a short, fiery specimen nicknamed “Little Napoleon”. McGraw managed the Giants from 1902 through 1934, leading them to 10 National League pennants and three World Series championships, including one as a player-manager. McGraw was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937, two years before the same honor would be bestowed upon Gehrig.
Each man signed this John Heydler Official National League baseball in black fountain pen. McGraw signed the sweet spot, while Gehrig penned his name in his customary location adjacent to the sweet spot. The signatures are lightly faded, but still remain clear and readable on this red and blue stitched baseball. This baseball comes with a full LOA from JSA (Z28157).
