Yankees pitcher and one-time manager Bob Shawkey was a workhorse pitcher whose career ended right as the era of the Murderers Row begun. Shawkey was an integral part of the Yankees teams of the 1910’s and 1920’s. The righty from Pennsylvania won 195 games over his career, including four seasons with 20 or more victories. Shawkey was the first full-time manager for the Yankees after the sudden and tragic death of long-time skipper Miller Huggins. He steered the Yankees to an 86-68 record and third place finish in the tumultuous season following Huggins’ death. Shawkey was paid this New York Yankees payroll check dated “May 29th” 1925 in the amount of $1557.47. The check was made payable to “J. ROBERT SHAWKEY” and he signed his name on the back in black pen and inscribed “Credit to my account only”. The receipt lines read “Salary for May” and Less expenses as per bill”. The front has “The American League Base Ball Club of New York, Inc.” on the top and the check is numbered 8081. The check has also been signed by general manager Ed Barrow and Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert, both Hall of Famers. There are punch holes from when the check cleared which affect Shawkey’s inscription, but not his signature. This comes with a LOA from Beckett Authentication.
