There are no two teammates in baseball more famed than that of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. From 195 through 1934, the pair appeared in the 3 and 4 slot for the Yankees as they won x pennants and three World Championships. In the process they terrorized American League pitchers by hitting a combined 859 home runs while they played together. As the most revered home run-hitting teammates in history, their signatures on a duel-signed ball is one of the most sought after pieces in the hobby. This one offered here is one of the more interesting as it is on a 1928-1933 John Heydler Spalding Official National League ball. The 1928-1933 period saw Ruth and Gehrig in their prime, fueling the Yankees as the team won two World Series. That their signatures are on a National League ball is significant. While we do not know the circumstances surrounding their presence on a National League ball, the duo faced the NL pennant winning Cardinals in the ’28 Series and the Chicago Cubs in the ’32 Series. The pair would also have come across a National League ball to sign when they both played in the first All-Star Game in 1933. Regardless of the where and how, this ball carries the mark of baseball royalty. The Babe has customarily signed in his usual position on the ball’s sweet spot, in bold bluish fountain pen, while Gehrig’s signature resides in his chosen spot on the panel right below the Babe’s, his in black fountain pen. The ball shows toning from age and appears to have been coated with shellack. The coating has flaked off in some spots, yet this does not take away from the visual quality of this ball. The two different inks and the red and black stitching gives this piece a unique and colorful appearance seldom seen in autographed balls. The ball comes with a LOA from Beckett Authentication for the signatures.
