Offered here are four bank checks signed by American Naval officer Richard Byrd Jr. Byrd specialized in feats of exploration, received a Medal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given in the United States, and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. Aircraft flights in which he served as a navigator have led him to cross the Atlantic Ocean, a portion of the Arctic Ocean and Antarctic Plateau. Byrd claimed that his expeditions made him the first to reach both the North and South Pole by air. Here are four checks from Liberty National Bank signed by this historic explorer. These items come with a LOA from University Archives.
