As the two most famous and popular players in the Major Leagues, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were the dynamic duo of the New York Yankees, who just finished a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1927 World Series. Both shared super agent Christy Walsh, who conceived the cross country barnstorming tour of both sluggers to earn extra cash for their baseball exploits. On October 25, 1927, Ruth’s “Bustin’ Babes” once again squared off against Gehrig’s Larrupin’ Lou’s, with each side drawing players from the respective communities. The game played that morning (another was played in the afternnon) was played in Marysville, CA in old Municipal Park, and was won by the Babe’s 9-7. The Babe hit two taters, with his 8th inning blast the margin of victory, while Gehrig went 4-4 with two dingers of his own. How is it we know all the facts of this game? They are presented in the original scorebook kept by the official scorer Eddie Burt, who was sports editor of the Marysville Appeal-Democrat newspaper. Oh, and inside the front cover are the signatures of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, both boldly scripted in pencil. 

      This standard Spalding Official Baseball Score Book was the standard and desired record keeper of its day. While this one has heavy spine issues and is held together by tape, the signatures of the two Yankees are unaffected. Interestingly, after that October 25th game, Eddie Burt kept right on keeping score of local Marysville games in this same book. Accompanying this scorebook is a August 19, 1973 article written by Bill Conlin and appearing in his “It Says Here” daily column for the Sacramento Union reminiscing about this 1927 contest complete with game information and mentioning scorekeeper Eddie Burt at the end. This is Burt’s scorebook from that day. 

      The 1927 season was the highlight of both Ruth and Gehrig’s careers, and the Murderer’s Row Yankees are widely regarded as the greatest team of all time. The barnstorming tour following that season was also highly popular and while many games were played, very few score books remaining of any of their games, especially so meticulously scored by an official scorer, and then signed by both Yankee stars.
