The Uruguayan referee Domingo Lombardi presided over one of the most entertaining soccer matches of the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics. Lombardi served as the head referee for the quarterfinal tilt between Spain and Italy at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. The first leg of this quarterfinal finished 1-1, with Spain’s Domingo Zaldua notching the first goal of the game in the 11th minute before Adolfo Baloncieri tied the score in the 63rd minute. With a scoreless finish, a spot in the semifinals awaited the winner of the second leg. Italy came out swinging in the second match, scoring in the 14th, 15th, and 18th minutes en route to a domineering 7-1 defeat of La Furia Roja.
Offered in this lot is the match card naming Lombardi the referee of the Spain-Italy contest. It features handwriting in gray pencil written in French, the official language of FIFA. Lombardi has signed the match card in purple pen, while an unidentified FIFA official has countersigned in gray pencil. This match card is mounted on a 9 x 6.25-inch piece of paper and is in good condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
