As an encore to a thoroughly dominant 1927 season, the 1928 New York Yankees held off a late-charging Athletics squad and proceeded to best the St. Louis Cardinals in the Fall Classic – thus sweeping a National League counterpart for the second straight October.
Offered is this official American League E.S. Barnard baseball that has been signed by 22 members of the 1928 squad. Some of the signatures on this baseball are light and some are not readable, but most importantly, Hall of Famer Babe Ruth’s distinctive signature is on the sweet spot and his signature is only a little light but very much readable. The north panel has the signature of Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig, along with Ben Paschel, Cedric Durst, Hall of Famer Tony Lazzeri, Bob Meusel and an Gene Robertson. The south panel has four signatures with Pat Collins being the only legible one. The west panel has the signatures of Hall of Famer Waite Hoyt, an unidentified player, Hall of Famer Herb Pennock, Joe Dugan, Johnny Grabowski and Myles Thomas. The east panel has five signatures with Earle Combs, Leo Durocher, Benny Bengough’s and Wilcy Moore (signed “Cy” Moore) signatures being legible. The ball displays heavy toning and the stampings are light. This baseball comes with a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication (A89219).
