After claiming the gold medal in the 1924 Paris Summer Olympics as the unheralded underdog, the Uruguayan delegation headed to the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics with high hopes. With a comfortable 2-0 win over the hosts in their opening game, it was clear La Celeste came to Europe looking to repeat. Uruguay defeated Germany 4-1 in the quarterfinals before turning a 1-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory over Italy behind goals from Pedro Cea, Hector Scarone, and Antonio Campolo. The gold medal match saw Uruguay take on continental archrivals Argentina in a final that necessitated two legs after a 1-1 draw in the opening 90 minutes. In the second leg of the gold medal game, Uruguay defeated Argentina 2-1 to claim their second consecutive Olympic gold medal.

Offered in this lot is an offset printing tin plate from the Germany and Uruguay match in the Olympic quarterfinals. The tin plate printing is from the end of the game, when Germany scored their only goal of the match through Dresdner SC stalwart Richard Hofmann. Adhered to the back of the tin plate is a newspaper or magazine photograph of Hofmann’s goal with the caption “El Unico goal aleman, conquistador desde 3 metros por tiro libre, a pesar del esfuerzo de Nasazzi”. This item measures 6.5 x 4 inches and originates from the archives of Mundo Uruguayo. It is in good condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
