Uruguay entered the 1928 Olympic soccer tournament with high expectations after a dominant, gold medal-winning performance at the 1924 Paris Summer Olympics. La Celeste started strong in 1928, defeating the host nation of the Netherlands 2-0 in the opening round before routing Germany 4-1 in the quarterfinals and dispatching Italy 3-2 in the semifinal round. Uruguay’s foe in the gold medal match was Argentina, their neighbors, archrivals, and eventual opponents in the 1930 World Cup final. Uruguay and Argentina drew their first match 1-1, necessitating a second leg of the tie to be played three days later at Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. Roberto Figueroa and Hector Scarone scored for Uruguay in the second leg of the final, powering La Celeste to a 2-1 victory over their fierce continental rivals Argentina. Offered in this lot is a team photograph of the 1928 Uruguay squad. Included in this photograph is team captain Jose Nasazzi, goalkeeper Andres Mazali, Jose Leandro Andrade, and eight other Uruguayan legends. Printed on this framed photograph is “Uruguayos Campeones del Mundo” and “IX Olmpiada[sic] Amsterdam 1928”. The photograph is displayed in a 11 ½ x 9 ½ -inch frame. It originates from the estate of Andres Mazali. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
