Offered in this lot is a book recounting the exploits of the Uruguayan Men’s National Soccer Team at the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics. La Celeste shocked the world to win the gold medal in 1924, when the Olympics represented the peak of global soccer, making their defense of the gold medal in 1928 one of world soccer’s great doubles. Uruguay were matched up against continental rivals Argentina in the gold medal match, which necessitated a second-leg replay after the first match finished 1-1. In the decisive final, Uruguay left the Olympic Stadium the 2-1 victors over La Albiceleste thanks to goals from Roberto Figueroa and Hector Scarone.
This book, titled Uruguay: Campeon De Mundo, was published in 1931 by J. Florensa of Montevideo. It is full of photographs and anecdotes from people involved with the Uruguayan triumph of 1928. Please note that the front cover is no longer attached to the binding of this book. The book originates from the personal collection of Andres Mazali, the goalkeeper for Uruguay’s victories in 1924 and 1928. It is a stunning example of rare South American soccer history. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
