Babe Ruth Auction to Benefit Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/6/2016
Encapsulated and graded VG 3 (MK) by PSA. This is one of just six examples, in total, recorded in PSA's census reporting. A period notation appears at the top edge on this ticket's back. On October 4, 1928, seventy-five-thousand fans crowded into Yankee Stadium to witness the first game of that year's World Series. In the contest – observed by the original owner of this scarce stub – Waite Hoyt pitched a three-hit complete game that resulted in a 4-1 victory for the Bronx Bombers. Bob Meusel's two-run 4th inning homer and Lou Gehrig's two RBI provided the winning side's offense, and Jim Bottomley's round-tripper accounted for the Cardinals' lone run. Babe Ruth had a good day at the plate, also, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Ruth went 10 for 16 (a phenomenal .625 average) with three homers and 4 RBI in the 1928 Yankees' four-game World Series sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals. Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
