FIFA’s 1930 World Cup tournament in Montevideo coincided with the host country’s Centennial on July 18th. The inaugural FIFA tournament included a series of celebrations that were held prior and during the competition with the participation of the President of Uruguay Juan Campistegui, FIFA President Mr. Jules Rimet, other FIFA Officers and the Delegates of the participating Countries, along with Officials of AUF the Uruguayan Football Association and the World Cup’s Executive Committee.

The first grand celebration was held at the Parque Hotel on July 11th by the President of Uruguay to honor Mr. Rimet and World Cup Competitors. At one point, two celebrations were held on the very same date, with the Uruguayan Government and FIFA Members attending the Uruguay Centennial on July 18th at the Independence Square in downtown Montevideo, and then moving a few miles further on to the Centenario Stadium inauguration.

According to press reports from the time, Uruguay’s celebrations for their triple World Soccer Championship continued after the World Cup, up until November. Uruguay were crowned Champions at the 1924 and 1928 Soccer Olympics as well as in the 1930 World Cup.

On August 13th, at an official ceremony in Montevideo, the President of Uruguay Juan Campistegui awarded the team members of the Uruguayan Squad with Triple World Championship Medals as well as a magnificent Sterling Silver Trophy inscribed to the celebrated team captain Jose Nasazzi. As it was usual during the initial years of the FIFA World Cup, this Silver Trophy is regarded as a World Cup Trophy. The same happened at the 1934 World Cup in Italy, when the host Country issued its own Championship Trophies.

This magnificent piece of World Cup football memorabilia issued to Jose Nasazzi and the Uruguay Team was one of the centerpieces in the renowned World Cup collection of Rony Almeida at the 1930 World Cup Museum in Montevideo.
