United States international forward Tom Florie was presented with this square, Art Deco style medal after the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay. Florie captained the American side, leading the Yanks to an appearance in the semifinals against Argentina. Florie scored his lone goal of the World Cup in a 3-0 group stage win over Belgium to help the United States top the group. Domestically, Florie played for Providence F.C. and New Bedford Whalers in the American Soccer League.
This offered medal measures 1 1/4 x 6/8 inches and features an image of a goalkeeper diving at an opposing player etched on the front. Etched on the reverse side of the medal is “1st World Championship / Thomas Florie / Montevideo 1930”. This medal is a fascinating collectible from the first World Cup! This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
