Uruguay stormed to a historic victory at the 1930 FIFA World Cup, defending their 1924 and 1928 Olympic gold medals on home soil. The tournament final, hosted in the gleaming new Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, saw Uruguay take on their 1928 Olympic finals opponents Argentina in a matchup of the two best soccer teams in the world. With a furious second half comeback, Uruguay claimed the title by a 4-2 scoreline to clinch their third world title and first of two World Cup championships.
Offered in this lot is a stunning trophy presented to the Uruguayan team by FIFA President Jules Rimet, the namesake of the official FIFA World Cup trophy until the 1970’s. This silver-colored trophy measures 30" tall and shows the Greek goddess Nike holding aloft a laced soccer ball atop a black stone pedestal. A silver plaque on the pedestal is etched with “FIFA / Copa Jules Rimet / Al / Team Vencedor / Montevideo / 1930”. This trophy shows slight weathering due to age and the ball is detatched. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
