The legendary Uruguayan footballer Hector Castro was presented with this stunning trophy for scoring the inaugural goal at the famed Estadio Centenario in the first-ever FIFA World Cup in 1930. While several games were played before the Uruguayans first took the pitch, the host nation had the honor of christening the beautiful Estadio Centenario on July 18th, 1930 against continental rivals Peru. Uruguay, the eventual winners of the 1930 World Cup, claimed a 1-0 victory over the Peruvians thanks to Castro’s strike in the 65th minute. Castro scored one other goal in the tournament, punching one in against Argentina in the World Cup Final to clinch Uruguay’s 4-2 winning scoreline.

On a club level, Castro was one of Uruguay’s finest players during the 1920’s and 1930’s, leading Club Nacional to three domestic titles as a player and five as a coach. Additionally, the one-handed Castro played in Argentina for the renowned Club Estudiantes de la Plata in the early 1930’s. While the records for El Manco’s international career are sparse, most sources credit the montevideano with 27 caps and 24 goals for Uruguay.

This offered trophy measures 13 inches tall and shows a silver footballer lining up over a ball. The trophy stands on a cylindrical base with an attached plaque that reads “A.U. de F. / A / Hector Castro / Scorer Del Primer Goal / 18 de Julio 1930”. An enamel “A.U. de F.” flag is present on the plaque. The footballer on the trophy measures nine inches tall and is depicted with both hands, unlike the recipient of the trophy. This historic item shows some minor weathering and wear from age but is otherwise in fantastic condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
