Babe Ruth Auction to Benefit Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/6/2016
Presented is a red-and-blue stitched ONL (Heydler) ball bearing the signatures of Yankee legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Ruth's confident but somewhat lightly inked script is situated in its customary sweet spot location, and Gehrig's unmistakable and precise penmanship graces a side panel. An inscription in an unknown hand (reading, "St. Pete Fla 1932") suggests that the signatures were obtained during Spring Training, where the relatively informal atmosphere allowed the autograph seeker to more successfully gain access to star players. (An additional notation appears on this panel, also, but there is no encroachment upon the ballplayers' scriptings.) The positioning of the Ruth and Gehrig signatures on this ball – which shows moderate evidence of use or handling – allows either athlete's name to be displayed nicely as a "single." A special souvenir, boasting remarkable aesthetic and historical appeal. LOA from JSA (Cert. #Y32391). Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
