Despite his odd batting stance, Mel Ott became one of the greatest hitters of the 1930’s. Blessed with one of the sharpest batting eyes in the history of the game, Ott walked five times in a game on three separate occasions, an MLB record. But it was with his bat that the Giants slugger made his biggest impact. Six times Ott led the National League in home runs, including a stretch of three consecutive years, 1936-1938.
This incredible baseball artifact was used by the Giants slugger during the prime of his career, 1934-1937, a period in which he collected three home run crowns and led his team to three pennants and a World Championship. Hillerich & Bradsby factory records show that Ott ordered 34-inch bats during the 1934 to 1937 seasons which is consistent with the dating of the bat’s center brand. The bat is un-cracked and shows heavy use with deeply embedded seam marks. There is slight checking from repeated ball contact and cleat marks can be seen on the barrel. The bat carries the hickory factory finish giving this bat a deep, warm coloration. An incredible bat from the NL’s first member of the 500 Home Run Club that comes with a Letter of Authenticity from MEARS (314705) who have graded it an A7.
