Jesse Owens achieved international fame at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany by winning four gold medals: 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4 × 100-meter relay. He was the most successful athlete at the Games and, as a black man, was credited with "single-handedly crushing Hitler's myth of Aryan supremacy.”
Presented is a Jesse Owens signature and inscription on a Berlin Olympics telegram delivery portfolio. The United States Olympian has signed his name in black pen on a 4 x 6-inch paper cut mounted inside the portfolio, and inscribed “36 Olympics” beneath his signature. The 8½ x 12-inch ivory paper portfolio has a color illustration of an Olympian with a green and gold laurel wreath in profile against a blue and green background with black type and gold borders on the front cover. The interior pages have the legend “Deutsche Reichsport Telegramm” in black type and the Owens signed cut has four Berlin Olympics postage stamps and postmarks from August 1936, which is when the Berlin Olympics were conducted. The opposite interior page has nine additional Berlin Olympics postage stamps and postmarks, also from August 1936. The back cover has an illustration of a gold bell with the logo of the 1936 Berlin Olympics against a blue and green background. This item comes with a full LOA from JSA (BB12397).
