Presented is the only complete Popeye cartoon ever to come to market. This original piece of comic strip artwork is from the hand of E.C. Segar, featuring his character, Popeye the Sailor, in the Sunday, September 20, 1936 “Thimble Theatre” episode as syndicated around the world by King Features Syndicate. The 20 x 21-inch black pen and ink comic strip is 16 panels long (4x4) and features the characters Wimpy and Olive Oyl in the first six panels, and Popeye enters in panel seven with his corncob pipe, and the word balloon, “Ahoy, Wimpy, Whatcha Doin’?” Wimpy and Popeye are discussing Wimpy’s new pet chicken, Betty.

The artist, Segar, has signed his name in the lower right corner panel “Segar,” along with the image of a cigar to the left. Panel six has an editor’s cut where Wimpy’s head and shoulders would appear, while panel 11 has an editor’s cut removing Popeye’s head and shoulders. There are slight dents in the upper right, lower left and lower right corners of the sheet, and a small cut in the upper left corner. Segar was an American cartoonist, best known as the creator of Popeye, a pop culture character who first appeared in 1929 in Segar's comic strip Thimble Theatre.
