July 4th, 1939 was a tragic day in baseball history. The great Iron Horse, Lou Gehrig, announced to the world his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a fatal disease. This was the last time Gehrig appeared in uniform at Yankee Stadium. It was here that he reunited with Babe Ruth, his friend and teammate. A decade later, Ruth would have a similar moment at Yankee Stadium, appearing for the final time while dying of terminal lung cancer. But for one moment, two of the greatest players of all-time were all smiles, with Ruth playfully tapping the smiling Gehrig’s cheek.
