Presented is a 1939 “Mutt” Mantle Commerce Mining and Royalty Company (Miami, Oklahoma) safety booklet. The 4 x 7¼-inch booklet is damaged with animal bites in the upper center and lower center of the booklet throughout, as well as moth holes in the right center throughout. There blue cardstock cover is printed with black type with the date, “1939” and the legend “Commerce Mining and Royalty Company” in the lower center. The 20-page white paper interior, stapled at the left margin, includes safety rules, regulations, and workplace productivity tips. “Mutt” Mantle, the father of New York Yankees Hall of Fame centerfielder Mickey Mantle, was born Elven Charles Mantle (1912-1952).  Mutt named his son Mickey in honor of one of his favorite baseball players, Mickey Cochrane, a Hall of Fame catcher who starred for the Philadelphia Athletics and Detroit Tigers. Mickey Mantle always spoke warmly of his father and said he was the bravest man he ever knew. "No boy ever loved his father more," he said. Mantle batted left-handed against his father when his father pitched to him right-handed, and he batted right-handed against his grandfather, Charles Mantle, when his grandfather pitched to him left-handed. His grandfather died at the age of 60 in 1944, and his father died of Hodgkin's disease at the age of 40 on May 7, 1952. When Mantle was four years old, his family moved to the nearby town of Commerce, Oklahoma, where his father worked in lead and zinc mines.
