Within the 1939 Play Ball set, the first series cards #1-#115) are less difficult to find then the higher number cards of (#116-#162). But the lower numbers also have variations called "sample" cards, which include a red stamp with "FREE SAMPLE CARD..." on the reverse, an advertising promotion for the new baseball cards. These sample cards were reportedly inserted in other packs of Gum, Inc. products to promote their first series of baseball cards. These cards are usually found in lower grade, and were produced in far fewer quantities as the regular issue cards. As you can expect, complete sets are almost non-existent.
