Offered is a 132-card near set of R165 Gum Inc. "War News Pictures" non-sports cards issued in 1939. Copyrighted 1939 by Gum, Inc., this production marked one of many successes enjoyed by that prolific confectioner. Its acceptance in the market notwithstanding, there's yet an ominous knell in this issue's title. War News Pictures hoped to report a conflict prosecuted by nations not American - With a grave and lifted brow, it tried to deny the chilling dread of our tomorrow. This was not a narrative delivered with cool detachment, as it so masqueraded, but instead it helplessly stank of an upheaval sure to consume our nation. Meanwhile, J. Warren Bowman had to deal with the capitalistic challenge at hand, and that was, principally, War News Pictures. He oversaw the creation of this card issue, even effecting the first known application of a technique known as air-brushing (or so we're told by good authority). Missing #'s 109-120 for completion. Grades 10% EX to EX/MT, 86% VG to VG/EX (mostly VG/EX), 4% lesser.
