Offered are the signatures of 25 golfers from the 1940 U. S. Open Golf Tournament on a wood chair-cane, with notable signatures in pencil including Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson and Walter Hagen, among others. The 1940 U.S. Open was the 44th U.S. Open, held June 6–9 at Canterbury Golf Club in Beachwood, Ohio, a suburb east of Cleveland. Lawson Little defeated Gene Sarazen in an 18-hole playoff to win his only professional major.
The signatures are inscribed on the 9-inch diameter brown wood seat of the 36-inch cane, with the inscription “National Open Championship Canterbury Golf Club Cleveland 1940” on the outer edge in pencil. Other notable signatures include Tommy Armour, Horton Smith, Craig Wood, Jug McSpaden, Henri Picard, Tony Manero, Ralph Guldahl, Ed Dudley and Victor Ghezzi.
The bottom of the seat has the inscription, in pencil, “1940 National Open Golf Champ. Tied at 287 Lawson Little Gene Sarazen Playoff Won by Lawson Little”. Opposite that inscription is the inscription “Scores Little – 287 Sarazen -287 Smith – 288 Wood – 289 Hogan - 290 Nelson – 290 – Mangrum – 290 Metz -291 Dudley – 292”.
