Club Atletico Peñarol are historically one of the best clubs in Uruguay, winning a combined 50 domestic titles, first as Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club (CURCC) and then under the traditional black-and-yellow stripes of Los Carboneros. CURCC were founded in 1891 in Montevideo, playing in the top flight of Uruguayan soccer until their rebranding as Peñarol for the 1914 season. Offered in this lot is a medal from the 50th Anniversary of Peñarol/CURCC in 1941. The medal was presented to Alvaro Gestido, a member of the both the 1928 Olympic and 1930 World Cup Uruguay teams, and the brother of future Uruguayan president Oscar Diego Gestido.
The offered silver medal is circular, with a diameter of one inch. Etched in high relief on the front of the medal is a man with a flag in front of a locomotive, harkening to the origins of the club as a team for the workers of the Central Uruguay Railway. Etched on the reverse side of the medal in high relief is “Cinquentenario Del Club A ‘Peñarol’ (C.U.R.C.C.) 1891-28-IX-1941”. The name “Alvaro Gestido” is also etched on the reverse side of the medal. This historic Club Atletico Peñarol medal is in good condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
